On July 15 Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov held talks with Kenyan Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ali Mwakwere, who is in Moscow on a working visit.
The sides discussed a broad range of pressing international problems and major world trends in the context of new global challenges and threats.
The ministers analyzed questions relative to the formation of a democratic world pattern, the ensuring of strategic stability, and the combating of international terrorism. Substantial emphasis in the talks was devoted to enhancing the UN's role in terms of mobilizing efforts by states in tackling these tasks, and also to the theme of reforming this organization and its Security Council.
The importance was affirmed of stabilization in Africa and of enhancing the effectiveness of the participation of the African Union and subregional organizations in these processes. The ministers discussed a set of problems related to the search of ways to resolve conflicts and crises on the African continent, which remain a serious obstacle to accomplishing the political, social, and economic tasks facing African countries. They considered questions of sustainable development, and the progress in implementing the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) program. In this context Lavrov affirmed the line of Russia on supporting NEPAD, and its intention to work jointly with the representatives of the G8 member countries and international organizations to raise the effectiveness of its implementation.
The ministers held an in-depth exchange of views on the issues of the state of, and a boost in bilateral cooperation in various fields. Special attention was paid to ways for expanding mutually beneficial ties in the trade and economic sphere and optimizing the juridical base of Russian-Kenyan relations.
